I am inclined to make work that challenges or educates people about issues that are misunderstood or undermined in society, like political issues, the black experience, societal stigmas, and connection and relationship dynamics. I use a variety of media to work with these diverse topics, though I’m most drawn to sculpture- mostly ceramic, painting, and textiles. I make my work in comparison to human scale, which directly influences how much weight is occupied conceptually, and in the space of the viewer.
Utilizing paradoxical themes and duality helps emphasize many of the concepts behind my work, as well as teeming, or the use of multiple objects overlapping or bunching together. I’m drawn to the use of metaphors and symbolism in my artwork, revisiting flower symbolism often.
I strive to shed light on these topics in a way that makes them conversation starters about the multilayered subject matter, influences research, and highlights the vulnerability of trying to view the different issues as they are lived. An effort to bring an epiphany to the viewer and evoke change in them, whether it’s just the way they see the world or whether they project that empathy and understanding onto other people.
